In 1845, 15 German missionaries departed from the Kingdom of Bavaria on a voyage to help spread the Lutheran Church's influence in America. After a very difficult and dangerous journey they settled in this area, naming it Frankenmuth, "Franken" deriving from the Franconian region of the Kingdom of Bavaria they were from, and "Muth" being the German word for courage. The courage of these Franconians not only brought them through the journey of a lifetime, but also allowed them to start a settlement that turned into a beloved destination that generations of people have enjoyed.
